Museum project on the Ashanti Prince Kwasi Boakye in Saxony and Kumasi (Ghana)
Andrea-Vicky Amankwaa-Birago has been commissioned by the cross-collection research department to investigate the historical Ghanaian biographies in Saxony and the connections between Kumasi and Saxony. This research is prompted by the loan of the portrait of Kwasi Boachi from 1849, painted by the renowned Dresden court painter Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein. The painting, which is part of the collection of the Freiberg City and Mining Museum, is now on loan to the Albertinum, a part of our institution that houses paintings from Romanticism to Contemporary Art.Kwasi Boachi, an Ashanti prince, studied mining in Saxony at the Royal Mining Academy in Freiberg in 1847. He became a well-known figure in Dresden Romanticism and had regular interactions with the Saxonian court. The trade relations between Ghana and Germany date back to the mid-17th century, and the biographies of various travelers from both countries hold valuable insights into this exchange
